Charleston pest control

We are West Virginia's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Charleston raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Charleston pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Charleston Raccoon Control Tip: Can You Kill A Raccoon In A Cage Humanely?
Raccoons can be a real nuisance when they find their way into urban or suburban areas, and one of the biggest issues is the fact that once they find their way into a property then they can cause a lot of damage. This can include the soiling and tearing of insulation material, along with the damage to the structure of any property that the raccoon will have caused to be able to get in and out. There are several methods of dealing with the issue, with some being lethal, but the cage trap is probably the most common approach, and while some will relocate the raccoon, there are others who will then decide to kill the raccoon.

The Problems With Killing A Raccoon In A Cage
However you choose to deal with a raccoon problem in your property, it is important that whatever you do is humane and doesn't cause any unnecessary suffering to the animal. In most cases, trapping raccoons is legal and permitted as long as you don't cause it any significant pain and that you deal with the animal humanely. The difficulty with cage trapping is that many areas will have regulations preventing the transportation or the relocation of pest animals such as raccoons, and in this instance you will need to find a way to kill the raccoon humanely.

Some of the most common methods of doing this often include:

Lethal Injection
This will usually require you to take the raccoon to a veterinarian or equivalently qualified individual in order to deliver the dose of the lethal injection that will quickly and humanely kill the raccoon. While this is certainly a humane way of dealing with the problem, in many cases it can be expensive, and those willing to deliver the injection may be quite difficult to find.

Shooting
A shot to the head is widely considered to be a humane way of killing a raccoon, and when done correctly will ensure that the animal is killed quickly and with a minimum of pain. The difficulty of using this approach is that it can damage the cage, unless you release the raccoon first, and the problem with releasing the raccoon is that it makes it more difficult to shoot, which can make this approach impractical.

Drowning
Although often mentioned as a relatively quick way of killing a raccoon, drowning is not generally considered to be a humane way of killing a raccoon. While submerging the trap will kill the raccoon, it can take a couple of minutes to kill the animal, and it will also cause the animal suffering as it dies.

Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide poisoning is often considered to be a humane option, as it generally causes a fairly painless death, as the animal will fall asleep before death. There are certain chambers that can be used for this purpose available, while some people will have home-made alternatives to this approach.

Alternative Ways Of Dealing With A Trapped Raccoon
While killing a raccoon in a cage is one way of dealing with the situation, in many areas it isn't the only option of dealing with the raccoon. While some areas do prohibit the relocation of raccoons, this is legal in many areas, and if you do relocate a raccoon in a rural area well away from any domestic or commercial property, then it is unlikely to cause a nuisance to anyone else. Where possible, choose a location with woodland nearby, as this is a raccoon's natural habitat and where they are most likely to thrive.
